Seeing as how they couldn't make money at it-- and then had to separate programming between the AM & FM... it's funny how time and technology changed everything. Now, FM is king and AM stations are selling for the price of a luxury car.

Was FM Stereo that costly (and that monitored by the FCC) back then? Sheesh! I always thought it was just another piece of standard equipment in the rack....Not 100% necessary, but a nice touch when you have it.....

Channel 13 may have been my favorite. Channel 11 had the better choice of programming, but with Channel 13, you never knew what was going to happen next.
As a very young kid in elementary school, I would watch KTVW's black & white film features, and experience the action as the film broke or jammed in the projector and burned, causing a break in the programming. Up went the slide: KTVW Lucky 13 ** I remember one slide that had a black cat on it.
There were the local interview or "talk" shows where guests did not show up, and no one called in on the phone line. At other times, there were repeated prank callers calling in to try to get on the air with some wise-crack. There was no 7-second delay and poor call-screening.
I attended numerous KTVW remotes. A country music show, LIVE, just down the street from KMO Radio, broadcast on KTVW TV on a Saturday afternoon. Also, the grand-opening of the Valu-Mart Store in Tacoma. Channel 13 was there with country music performers, local politicians, and it was all broadcast on a sunny afternoon, with the camera facing the cream colored wall outside the store. You could hardly see anything on the television. It was all washed out. I was checking it out on a KTVW monitor there in the parking lot.
I loved it! You almost couldn't believe they were broadcasting this stuff!

KURB - Little Rock, AR (Cumulus "Mix" B98.5FM)
KETO - not in use as far as I know
KTNT - FM 102.5 - Eufaula, OK -- KTNT calls originated at Norman G. Baker's station in Muscatine, Iowa. Baker's KTNT [Know The Naked Truth] was forced off the air in 1931. Baker was a rather notorious quack -- specializing in cures for cancer, operating clinics in Muscatine -- which were heavily promoted over KTNT.

8 stations left with three letter calls? It will be interesting to see how many remain over time. Call letters don't mean as much to radio owners as they did in the old days. Look at any dozen major station websites. They go by the names: BUZZ, CLICK, JACK, MIX, SNAP, CRACKLE, & POP.

I guess in a way, Bill Schonely was right. San Francisco(the Oakland Seals and then the San Jose Sharks), Los Angeles(with the Kings and then the Anaheim Ducks) and Vancouver eventually got NHL teams, and other cities that were long time homes to minor league hockey in the West like Phoenix, also eventually got NHL teams.

Unfortuntely cities like Portland and Seattle STILL don't have the NHL, which is definitely a shame. Although hopefully with all the stuff going on now with the new arena proposal, those days will hopefully be over soon.

I think we picked up KOIN 6 in Portland a couple times, but other than that, TV was pretty limited from the old roof-top antenna.
Radio DX'ing was another thing altogether. I have picked up Chicago, Nashville, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Texas, KOB/Albuquerque always boomed in at night, and stations along the West Coast by the dozens. I haven't done that in years. It is so simple to get them in crystal-clear digital sound on the web.

Yes! I remember as a kid KTNT-TV 11 did what they called back then "Stretch TV" where shows were aired 5 days a week. It was when Channel 11 ran the Star Trek episodes at 6pm that I became a fan of the show---and I still am to this day. They also did the same thing with the "Patty Duke Show," and others. Syndication didn't have nearly the offerings like today, so for an independent channel back then programming was tough! And then you think about poor KTVW Channel 13 back then....they did show old programs that I enjoyed watching in re-runs as a kid like "Boston Blackie," "Walter Winchell," and a number of others from way back when. They did run some good old black and white films back then and they would do contests where you could call in and win and as a little guy I did that---remember winning a set of cuff links and other little prizes. It was fun to watch and win! I was lucky and had my own little black and white TV set back then and luckily the antenna would pick up Channel 13 fairly well.

And on our big color TV set from Sears back in the mid-1960's the biggest surprise happened one Saturday morning when I turned on Channel 2--expected it to be CBUT-TV from Vancouver(which would come in ok depending how we had our antenna pointed), only it wound up to be a skip from KTWO Channel 2 from Casper, Wyoming. Never forgot that---I was trying to figure out why the NBC cartoon show was on an hour earlier. Biggest TV skip I ever experienced. Anyone else have experienced anything like that?
